THE BOTANICAL BEHIND OUR BESTSELLING ESSENCE
PREPARE, HYDRATE & ACTIVATE WITH ACTIVATING WATER ESSENCE+ The decision between natural and synthetic ingredients often comes down to what aligns best with your skin's needs and values. Natural ingredients often offer powerful benefits equal to their synthetic counterparts. Just as Hyaluronic Acid has hydrating properties, did you know that Marshmallow Root, found in nature, has superior hydration benefits too? At Jurlique, nature is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we chose Marshmallow Root as the hero of our Activating Water Essence+. THE POWER OF NATURAL INGREDIENTS IN ACTIVATING WATER ESSENCE+ Activating Water Essence+ is formulated with 98% natural origin ingredients,* including Marshmallow Root extract. It contains a high mucilage content—a thick, syrup-like substance with intensive hydrating, softening, and balancing properties. Marshmallow Root is able to attract and retain water, providing lasting hydration while forming a protective barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss. Using Activating Water Essence+ is like giving your skin a moisture boost, perfectly preparing skin for the next step of your skincare ritual. THE STORY OF MARSHMALLOW ROOT The Marshmallow Root used in Activating Water Essence+ begins its journey on our farm in the pristine Adelaide Hills. Our biodynamic** practices ensure that we nurture the plant in a way that respects the environment and the integrity of the ingredient itself. We use two methods to extract the full benefits of Marshmallow Root: Bio-Intrinsic™ extraction and maceration. Bio-Intrinsic™ extraction is a meticulous process that begins with distillation, where the dried Marshmallow Root is steamed to release its delicate essential oils and nutrients. This is followed by percolation, where a liquid solvent is circulated through the root to draw out water-soluble compounds. Finally, the process concludes with ashing, where the remaining plant material is burned to extract essential minerals, ensures that every beneficial part of the Marshmallow Root is extracted and infused into our skincare. We also utilise maceration, where the dried root is soaked in purified water and glycerine for three days. This method allows us to draw out the full hydrating potential of the root, making Activating Water Essence+ even more effective. THE NATURAL CHOICE FOR EFFECTIVE SKINCARE Natural ingredients often offer powerful benefits equal to their synthetic counterparts. Just as Hyaluronic Acid has hydrating properties, did you know that Marshmallow Root, found in nature, has powerful hydration benefits too? Activating Water Essence+, formulated with the potent properties of Marshmallow Root, is clinically proven to instantly boost skin hydration by 55%^, demonstrating that natural ingredients can deliver impressive results. Discover the effective power of Marshmallow Root in our Activating Water Essence+—your essential step to hydrated, radiant skin. * Based on ISO 16128-1 and ISO 16128-2 (including formulation water) **Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Read moreWHY YOU SHOULD DOUBLE CLEANSE YOUR SKIN
In recent times, many beauty publications have touted double cleansing as a major breakthrough in skin care. If you’re thinking about jumping on the double cleansing bandwagon, wondering how double cleansing differs from regular cleansing or what the real skin benefits are, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to discover the answer to your questions and more. What is double cleansing? Double cleansing, like many of our now ingrained skin care methods, originated in South Korea and Japan. Essentially, double cleansing is cleansing your skin twice. A technique that involves using two different types of cleansers after one another to deeply remove all traces of makeup, sunscreen, sweat and other surface debris from your face. What are the benefits of double cleansing? 1. While cleansing your skin twice doesn’t sound like the kind of party your skin wants to attend because of the “stripping” nature of cleansing, double cleansing really gets to work and ensures that you remove every last bit of surface debris, dead skin cells and impurities that can cause skin break outs, inflammation and irritation.2. Using two different types of products to double cleanse (we’ll hash this out in a moment) means that you’re not only removing surface build-up and gunk, but you’re also getting deep down into your pores to remove pollutants – making your cleansing ritual far more effective.3. If you wear makeup daily, then this one’s for you. Double cleansing helps break down your makeup so that you’re not scrubbing at your skin or using an excess of harsh makeup wipes. There’s no more dreading removing your makeup after a long day.4. As a result of effectively cleaning your pores, another benefit is an overall more radiant, less congested, even skin tone. Clarified pores = healthier looking skin. Double cleansing method Here’s the fun part. In order to double cleanse, all you need is: an oil cleanser, a muslin cloth or face towel, and a cream, lotion, gel or foam cleanser that suits your skin type. Once you’ve got all your tools, follow the steps below:1. Massage 2-3 pumps of your oil cleanser (we recommend our Nourishing Cleansing Oil) onto dry skin including the eye area using circular motions.2. Next you can either wet your muslin cloth, face cloth or face towel with warm water, wring out the excess water and then place the cloth onto your face gently to swipe away the product. Or as you add warm water to the Nourishing Cleansing Oil once applied - on contact with water - the oil transforms into a rich cleansing milk that hydrates and softens the skin as it removes makeup including waterproof mascara, excess oil, pollution and impurities.3. After rinsing/swiping away the emulsified oil, it’s time to cleanse with your regular cream, lotion, gel or foam cleanser and rinse off as normal. Choosing a second cleanser As always, be sure to choose a cleanser that suits your skin type. Keep in mind with double cleansing, your regular cleansing product isn’t doing all the work alone. Gentle cleansing products will suffice and reduce any unnecessary stripping of your skin. Here are our recommendations:Dry skin:If you have dry and sensitive skin, go for our Replenishing Cleansing Lotion. It calms and conditions the skin. Featuring Marshmallow Root and Calendula Extracts, your skin will be clean and soothed.Mature skin:Go for an anti-ageing cleanser like our Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam for mature skin. With its rich and luxurious texture, it’ll be a treat for your skin after your oil cleanser step as jojoba beads gently exfoliate to reveal a youthfully luminous complexion.Blemish prone skin:Blemish prone skin is also usually associated with oily skin. So, you want something that balances the skin. Our Revitalising Cleansing Gel is perfect as its key ingredients of Peppermint Leaf Extract and Rosemary Leaf Extract soothe the skin while rebalancing oiliness.Combination skin:Combination skin needs to be simultaneously hydrated and balanced. Our Radiant Skin Foaming Cleanser is perfect for all skin types and is the go-to for combination skin. A powerful blend of antioxidant-rich botanicals leaves skin thoroughly cleansed and protected, but not dry or tight. Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to double cleanse in the morning?Yes! You might think your skin is clean enough from the night before, but your skin still produces grime and sweat while you sleep. By double cleansing, you’re creating a clean slate for your morning skin care and/or makeup routine. Will double cleansing make my skin oiler? No. While oil cleansers are made from oils, they don’t necessarily add more oil to your face. The purpose of oil cleanser is to lift away skin surface debris – this includes excess oil. This means your skin balances out and the production of oil and on your skin rebalances itself. Also, if you follow up with your regular cleanser, the oil cleaner washes away and doesn’t remain on your skin. Can I use coconut oil or olive as an oil cleanser? It would be great to cost-wise. However, coconut oil and olive oil are comedogenic. Meaning they clog your pores instead of cleaning them. Unlike our Nourishing Cleansing Oil which emulsifies, other oils don’t combine with water so they end up sitting on top of your skin. Cleansing oils are specifically designed to cleanse your skin, so it’s safer to steer clear of coconut and olive oil to cleanse.Double cleansing is a relatively straight forward skin care technique that really gives you noticeable results and improves the effectiveness of the products in your skin care ritual. You might call the Rose “queen of the botanicals”, such is its popularity and regard. Our particular matriarch is the species Rosa gallica. Nine varieties of Rosa gallica grow on our organic farm in the Adelaide hills of South Australia, their blooms spanning a spectrum of shades, but their properties and intoxicating scent identical. This is the story of the queen of botanicals and her journey from first planting to taking centre stage in our nourishing skin care. Step 1 | South Australian provenance Adelaide is the Rose capital of Australia, thanks in large part to its climate – hot in summer and with plenty of rain throughout winter – which is ideal for growing Roses. Nutrient-rich soil and pure, unpolluted air are some of the most important qualities of our farm and to capitalise on this pristine environment, we follow organic growing methods, keeping the farm free from synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and insecticides. Step 2 | Plant partners Planting is meticulously planned so that all our botanicals can work symbiotically to protect each other from harm. Our Roses are planted beside Yarrow, which nourishes and protects them from predatory insects. Step 3 | Hand-picking petals Harvesting begins in November each year, and our Roses are gently picked by hand when at their peak. Between November and February, we harvest 30 to 60 kilograms of Rose petals each week. Some weeks, when we’ve had particularly good weather, the Roses grow extra quickly and we can harvest up to 100 kilograms of petals per week. Step 4 | Next comes drying The Rose petals are laid flat on large racks and placed in our heated drying cupboards for five to six days. The dried petals can be stored for up to three years without diminishing their active ingredients. Rose is a key ingredient in many of our products, so it’s important that we always have a continuous supply. Step 5 | Extracting the nutrients To unlock the nutrients within the Rose, each petal goes through our exclusive extraction process. This proprietary process captures the pure, potent and active essential nutrients and minerals from the plants. This precious Rose extract is then transported to our nearby Natural Beauty Plant, which was developed in line with our culture of sustainability. Step 6 | The products you love Here at the Natural Beauty Plant, the Rosa gallica extract becomes the hero ingredient in many of our most loved products, including our bestselling Rare Rose Lotion and Rose Hand Cream. As well as imparting its divine scent, this botanical beauty helps hydrate dry skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple.

Read moreWHY HYALURONIC ACID IS A SKIN CARE MUST-HAVE
The word “acid” can have negative connotations, sounding harsh and too strong, especially when it comes to skin care. But hyaluronic acid (or HA) is the opposite: it’s hydrating and helps restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier, helping it appear plump and naturally glowing. It’s a great ingredient for helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is gentle enough for skin that’s prone to sensitivity or redness. We break down everything you need to know about this skin care must-have. WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID? Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that’s found in our skin. It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which helps keep our skin hydrated. Unfortunately, just like collagen, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older, which is why it’s often found in skin care products aimed at reducing the signs of ageing. Eating antioxidant-rich foods such as blueberries, raspberries and kale also helps the skin to retain hyaluronic acid. WHY IS HYALURONIC ACID GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN? Hydration, hydration, hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, drawing and retaining water and helping to keep your skin continually moisturised. Although our bodies don’t produce as much as we age, thankfully we can apply it topically and reap the same benefits. When used in creams and serums, it brings moisture to the surface of the skin, can improve elasticity and helps it appear firmer. Hydrating and plumping? Sign us up. WHEN TO USE HYALURONIC ACID? Because HA is so powerful, you only need to have one skin care product in your ritual that contains it to see the effects. You can use it once or twice daily under creams and lotions depending on your routine. For best results, use on slightly damp skin so the HA has water to bind to and doesn’t have to pull it from within. DOES HYALURONIC ACID CLEAR UP SKIN? Hyaluronic acid has a long list of skincare benefits, from plumping and soothing to anti-ageing. But can hyaluronic acid clear up skin? While it doesn’t directly target acne or blemishes, it can contribute to a clearer, more radiant complexion. As a powerful humectant, HA brings moisture to the skin’s surface, which plumps it up and helps it appear firmer. This intense hydration combined with HA’s anti-inflammatory properties can help protect the skin from acne breakouts. WHERE DOES HYALURONIC ACID IN SKINCARE COME FROM? Hyaluronic acid used in skincare products is mostly derived from plant-based sources — like wheat, corn or soy. At Jurlique, our skin care products are natural-based, using botanical extracts grown on our biodynamic* farm that are carefully chosen for their skin-loving properties — including some plants that are known as nature’s answer to hyaluronic acid: Senna seed polysaccharide: This natural active is a plant-derived form of hyaluronic acid. The extract from these seeds forms a protective film on the skin that strongly binds water to provide intense moisturisation and reduce the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. It is found in our Moisture Plus Rare Rose range. Tremella fuciformis polysaccharide: This is a rare extract that holds up to 500 times its own weight of water. It’s considered nature’s hyaluronic acid, thanks to its ability to restore dry skin to its optimal hydrated state, improving skin elasticity and promoting a healthy appearance. Find it in our Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, which is applied after Activating Water Essence and before your eye care. Red clover flower extract: This powerful extract has been found to enhance the hydrating role of HA and smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and it is in our Herbal Recovery Signature Serum. You’ll also find red clover flower extract in our Purely Age-Defying Refining Treatment, a smoothing exfoliating treatment designed for weekly use. WHAT HYALURONIC ACID INGREDIENTS SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR? When looking for hyaluronic acid skin care products, it’s not just about the “HA” on the label. You also need to check the specific ingredients, size and diameter of the hyaluronic acid used. Products containing hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, sodium acetylated hyaluronate or sodium hyaluronate are all great options. Some brands combine different HA molecules for maximum effectiveness. Size matters too. Recent studies have shown that HA between 50 and 1,000 kDa works best, with 130 kDa being the sweet spot. Anything larger may just sit on your skin and not do much. *Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Jurlique’s products and farm are not certified or affiliated with Demeter® USA or Demeter International. What is sodium hyaluronate? Sodium hyaluronate is a water-soluble salt derived from hyaluronic acid. Due to its small molecular weight, sodium hyaluronate is easily absorbed into the skin while binding water to hydrate and plump. What are the natural sources of hyaluronic acid? Senna seeds, white fungus (Tremella fuciformis) and red clover flowers are some natural sources of hyaluronic acid. What does hyaluronic acid do for the skin? If you’re wondering if pure hyaluronic acid is good for the skin, the answer is a resounding yes! HA recharges the skin with hydration, alleviating dryness and restoring moisture balance. It keeps your complexion looking plump and naturally glowing. How to apply hyaluronic acid? Apply hyaluronic acid to slightly damp skin (this is key) after cleansing and exfoliating but before your moisturiser. For a nighttime hydra boost, layer on your favourite moisturiser and seal it with a few drops of facial oil. During the day, finish your routine with a moisturiser with SPF to lock in hydration and protect your skin. You can also add hyaluronic acid to your face skincare regimen through cleansers, mists, moisturisers, serums, masks, lip care, hand care and body care products. What happens if you use too much hyaluronic acid on your face? While pure hyaluronic acid is good for the skin, too much can cause dryness, redness or irritation. Always follow up with a moisturiser to seal the hydration and provide moisture for the HA to draw — should the air around be dry. What works well with hyaluronic acid for skin? Because hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, it generally works well with just about every skincare product, including retinol, niacinamide, vitamin C, vitamin E and AHAs/BHAs. What not to mix with hyaluronic acid? Ingredients with low pH levels, as they can make hyaluronic acid less effective. What is the best concentration of hyaluronic acid? Dermatologists recommend sticking to a hyaluronic concentration between 0.5% and 2%. Can you use hyaluronic acid under your eyes? Absolutely! Because it’s a natural molecule, hyaluronic acid is super gentle on the delicate under-eye area. It’s a common ingredient in eye care products. What foods are high in hyaluronic acid? Foods high in hyaluronic acid include bone broth, leafy greens, soy, sweet potatoes, nuts and seeds, organ meats, citrus fruits and berries.
