How to Use a Face Mist in Your Skincare Routine

Step onto a long flight and feel your skin tighten within the hour. Sit through an afternoon of office aircon and notice the dullness creep in by 3pm. A face mist exists for moments like these. A few light spritzes can reset tired skin, rebalance moisture, prepare the complexion for what follows, and turn an ordinary routine into a small ritual.

Below, our in-house spa educator Katie walks through how to use a face mist properly, when to reach for one throughout the day, and how to choose the mist that suits your skin and your senses.

What Is a Face Mist?

A face mist is a lightweight, water-based spray designed to hydrate and refresh the skin. The best face mists contain humectants like glycerin to draw moisture into the upper layers of the skin, soothing botanicals like aloe vera and marshmallow root, and natural fragrances to lift the senses.

A mist is not a setting spray, and it is not a substitute for moisturiser. It is a step on its own. One that hydrates instantly, prepares skin for what follows, throughout the day.

How to Use a Face Mist in Your Skincare Routine

In your daily routine, a face mist comes after cleansing and before your moisturiser. The order matters. Applying mist to slightly damp skin gives the humectants something to bind to, and leaves skin feeling prepared for the products that follow.

The Mist Itself

Hold the bottle about 15 to 20 centimetres from your face and lightly spritz across the skin. Or mist into your hands and gently press onto face, neck and decolletage. It avoids the cold-spray shock, gives more even coverage, and slows you down enough to notice the scent rising. Close your eyes for a moment as the fine droplets settle. This is the small pause that turns a routine into a ritual.

If You Use a Toner

A face mist and a toner sit in the same step of a routine, and many people use one or the other rather than both. If you use both, apply your toner first to balance the skin, then mist while the toner is still slightly damp. Both deliver water-based hydration, so the principle is layering lightest to richest.

What Comes After

Apply your serum or any targeted treatment while skin is still slightly damp. Damp skin gives your products a smoother surface to work on, so they spread more easily and feel less drying. Finish with a moisturiser to seal everything in.

When to Use a Face Mist Throughout the Day

A face mist works hardest when you keep one within reach. There are plenty of moments worth a spritz beyond your daily routine.

In the morning, mist after cleansing for an instant burst of hydration that wakes both skin and senses. Mid-morning, a light spritz over makeup refreshes a dewy finish without disturbing the layers beneath.

In the afternoon, reach for it whenever skin feels tight or dull. Aircon and reverse-cycle heating are quiet skin dehydrators, and the Australian climate (long sunny days, dry winters, salt air) makes it worse.

After a workout or yoga class, mist to cool and rebalance.

Before bed, a light layer pairs beautifully with your evening serum.

A face mist also travels well. The dry, recycled air of a long flight can leave skin tight within an hour. Stash a 100ml or smaller bottle in your carry-on, spritz every couple of hours, and step off the plane with skin still soft.

A small ritual tip: on hot days, store your mist in the fridge. The chilled spritz feels especially good after time outdoors, and works just as well as a refresh for the body, especially across the decolletage.

FAQs

How many times a day can you use a face mist?

As often as your skin asks for it. Most people use a face mist twice daily, after cleansing morning and evening. You can also spritz throughout the day for a refresh, before makeup, after exercise, or any time skin feels dry or tight.

Should you let a face mist dry before applying moisturiser?

No. Apply your moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp from the mist. The hydration layer helps your moisturiser glide on more easily and helps lock the moisture in, rather than letting it evaporate from the surface.

Can a face mist replace moisturiser?

No. A face mist hydrates the upper layers of the skin, but it doesn't contain the richer emollients and occlusives needed to seal that hydration in. Use a mist alongside a moisturiser, not in place of one.

Is a face mist the same as setting spray?

No. A face mist is a skincare product designed to hydrate and refresh the skin. A setting spray is a makeup product designed to hold makeup in place. The two can overlap, but their primary jobs are different.

What ingredients should you look for in a face mist?

Look for humectants like glycerin to draw moisture in, soothing botanicals like aloe vera and marshmallow root, and antioxidant-rich plant extracts. Avoid alcohol-heavy formulas, which can have the opposite effect. All four Jurlique mists are built around farm-grown Marshmallow Root for exactly these reasons.

Can you use a face mist while travelling?

Yes, and it's one of the best places to use one. Long flights and air-conditioned cabins are dehydrating. A 100ml or smaller travel-sized mist is carry-on friendly and can be spritzed every couple of hours to keep skin comfortable from boarding to baggage claim.
